Teal versus Turquoise: The Difference

Nothing gets my rabid eyes going than arrival of a fresh batch of new nail polish. I’m so excited that I can’t decide which to try on first, ‘In the Cab-ana’ or ‘Naughty Nautical’, both from Essie.

I have been describing In the Cab-ana as a turquoise (blueish green), but right next to Naughty Nautical, it is decidedly a teal (greenish blue), don’t you think? Nothing like a comparison to show it for what it is — If one is to get philosophical about it.

These pictures were taken indoors at night, with artificial light (a trekking head lamp, haha). I think wearing both at the same time would solve my dilemma.

Another one bites the dust? Milani Luminoso NOT discontinued

My first beauty-related heartache was a Lux facial cleanser. I must have been in junior high school when I found it: a transparent facial cleanser in a big pump bottle with what, I now realize, must have been glycerine goodness. I loved it so much since it made my skin clean and supple. When I tried to repurchase, however, the stuff could not be found anywhere! I looked and looked and looked. Oh the heartbreak.

Since then, many a heartbreaks have ensued, beauty and otherwise, and hearing that Milani is discontinuing its wonderful ‘Luminoso’ blush gives a little stab in my heart. Just a little, since I am fortunate to have one, which I suspect will outlive me.

So here’s a little ode to a perfectly glistening, peachy goodness of a blush. You had a short and good run, and your loss will be lamented in blogs to come.

EDIT 8 August 2013: Well, I should have waited for Milani’s response first before believing online news. I emailed them and they said Luminoso is not discontinued. They are running out of stock so have stopped offering it on their website, but it’s not discontinued. They expect fresh stock soon. Yay!

For those looking for dupes,’ Rose d’Oro’, also from the Milani baked blush line, can be peachy if you use as light hand; Milani ‘Amber Nectar’ Illuminating Blush is another alternative although it is much lighter in color.

Nail of the Week: Ombre Blue Manicure

notd blue ombre2

When holiday come ’round, and I don’t have to see a soul for work purposes, crazy manicures galore! This week: blue ombre manicure. Glitters and ombres are my thing. I love patterns and bling, but most times I don’t have the patient for them.

These used OPI ‘Dating a Royal’ (the darkest) and China Glaze ‘Bahamian Escape’ (the lightest), and various mixtures between them. Start by putting on the darkest and lightest colors where you want them (in my case, on the thumb and pinkie), then start mixing them up for the fingers in between. I just mix them on any level and smooth, non-sticky surface (I use the backings of stickers).

Products local beauty brands should be developing

nail polish stash

Having been a faithful and (mostly) indiscriminate consumer of the beauty industry, I am somewhat disappointed that the local Indonesian brands are missing out on a lot of opportunities for growth. They churn out the same products again and again and again (and help me god if i hear another word of ‘khatulistiwa’ in a marketing spin!).

Off the top of my head, these are what we seriously lack:

1. Nail polish

If you’re in the United States or Korea, you’ll find that every makeup brand and their sister has a nail polish line. Indonesia has none, not one. The last time I checked, there are more than 80 million women over the age of 15 in Indonesia. It’s like the whole country of Germany not having their own nail polish: 80 million sets of 20 nails. It is mind boggling.

2. Oil cleansers

If you aren’t using oil cleansers you are a moron. I was such a moron until a few years ago, always feeling that the oils I tried leave too much of a filmy residue, and that double cleansing is too much trouble/too stripping, etc. Until I found my holy grail of oil cleansers, the Muji for Sensitive Skin. I may or may not do a review in the future, but the term ‘holy grail’ should suffice to reflect the gravity of my love for oil cleansers: it cleanses the face with its slimy, slippery goodness, avoiding any tugging, dispenses with the cotton ball (and more tugging), gets into the crevices of your face including inner lash line without stinging (most of the time), and washes away squeaky clean clean clean, with WATER. It is also a repeat buy. Really, beauty brands, YOU. WILL. PROFIT.

3. Mascara

The best mascaras are still the foreign brands, from Maybelline to Majolica Majorca, and everything in between. I don’t understand how it is so hard to make mascara?? Black pigments and some emulsifier, and there you have it. One can even copy the brushes galore. What is so hard? This is also a repeat buy; apart from facial powder and lipstick, it is one decorative item that people are likely to buy a few times a year. It’s a necessity,

4. Primers

It is 2013 and where is my locally-made siliconey goodness of priming apparatus?? Again, what is so hard? Just schlep some silicones, aloe vera what-nots, perhaps even some zinc oxides for sun protection, and there you have it. La Tulipe has an eyeshadow base, praise them, but it’s a wee bit draggy, ensuing in some pulling of the eyelids that we all can do without.

In the last few years, I’ve seen development in the are of sunscreens and eyeliners, so I’m not going to bitch about these. For now. But really, it’s taken you this long, brands? Must I go and develop these myself?!

Anyway, if you decide to make them, and make the profit, you know where to find me. I have more ideas where that’s coming from.

Orange, juicy orange

Orange is one of my favorite makeup color. Orange and coral and turquoise and olive…..

A couple of my other Illamasqua possessions are ‘Temper’ intense lip gloss (“bright tangerine orange”) and ‘Apex’ powder compact eyeshadow.

My Temper arrived with a horribly splayed brush, and that is why it does not get as much loving as it should from me. It is bright and fun, though very sticky. It is more orange in real life than my picture depicts below.

Apex was bought to be used as blush. I love that it is compact, and that the lasting powder is great. It does not turn terracotta on me provided I do not blend it too much (I use a tapping motion for application). It’s currently on sale for £5. If you are lacking an orange-red blush, go grabby.

Illamasqua Androgen Cream Pigment

Illamasqua’s summer sale on its UK website has been going on for a few weeks, and actually I’m not surprised it’s still on. There isn’t much good stuff. It’s the last week of the sale though, so if you haven’t already, go check it out. There is free international shipping for a minimum purchase of £50.

For myself, I got the cream pigment in ‘Androgen’ and the cream blusher in ‘Seduce’, mostly to quiet that inner voice telling me it is a good deal. Surprisingly given the height of postal traffic nearing Eid, my order arrived very quickly. This review is for Androgen.

Below is a comparison with Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge ‘Calypso Coral’ (an old version when it was still in the pot). Obviously they are quite different, with Calypso Coral being redder and with a dewy finish. Incidentally, my Calypso Coral is probably more than four years old, and it’s holding up quite well. I don’t use it often, but periodically I wipe off the top layer and drench it in alcohol for a few seconds. i do this randomly to all my cream blushes and old(er) lipsticks, to extend their life a bit. The ideal solution, of course, is to have a dedicated makeup fridge.

Left Bobbi Brown Calypso Coral Right Illamasqua AndrogenLeft: Bobbi Brown ‘Calypso Coral’; Right: Illamasqua ‘Androgen’

Androgen is quite a lovely orange-y coral. It is solid to the touch, creamy upon swipe of a finger, easily blended and dries quite matte. Its lasting power on my oily skin is quite good with primer.

I also quite like it on the lips; there is a mod feel to the color. Androgen is also lovely layered under gloss. I haven’t tried it on the eyelids, but I think this would be a good base for peach, lighter browns, and orange eyeshadows. Will need to try that soon.

When I bought it, Androgen was priced at £10. Now it’s down to £7.50. For such a fun and versatile product, I think it’s one of the best values you can find in Illamasqua’s current summer sale.

Jadi bagaimana perawatannya? Ya tentu apa tujuan yang dikehendaki? I’m a nail polish addict, so my nails are the canvas I need to show off the polish. Or unless you have so much money you don’t know what to do with it.

So it’s a waste to shower nails and hair with nutrients, etc, because they’re dead. Killed.

Nutrisi itu diperlukan sebelum rambut atau kuku keluar dari permukaan kulit (killed!). But that’s for another blog post.
